Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) Wiki

Dance Dance Revolution 2ndMIX, or 2ndMIX, is the 2nd game in the Dance Dance Revolution series of music video games. It was released as an arcade game by Konami on January 19, 1999. Although only officially released in Japan, units exist worldwide. It has a total of 36 songs: ten from the original Dance Dance Revolution arcade game and 26 all-new songs.

General Information / Changes[]

  • The game features a new version of the introduction video during the opening credits.
  • The EXTRA STAGE system present in Dance Dance Revolution was removed.
  • All the modes and gameplay (scoring formula included) present in Dance Dance Revolution are included in 2ndMIX, with a few new additions and modifications:
    • Step grade E is introduced, which is awarded for failing the stage, regardless of score.
    • The song list now changes depending on stage number, as well as hidden requirements which can change the available songs.
    • The number of songs displayed on screen for each stage was expanded from six to eight.
    • A random song option (Roulette) was added, which appears as a spinning CD and banner constantly changing.
    • Three exclusive STEP BATTLE songs were added: 20,november~DDR VERSION~, KEEP ON MOVIN' and LET THEM MOVE. These songs are only playable in STEP BATTLE, where each player records steps, then plays the other player's recorded steps. One of the three STEP BATTLE songs appear randomly in 2nd Stage, but players can access a specific song by using a code.
    • 2ndMIX LINK VERSION's ALL MUSIC Mode can be played by both players in VERSUS and COUPLE with different difficulties, unlike 2ndMIX or outside ALL MUSIC mode. The gameplay screen shows "PARTY" when two different difficulties are selected.
    • First Dance Dance Revolution game with 12th and 16th notes. Dance Dance Revolution only featured 4th and 8th notes.
    • New modifiers added: TURN (RIGHT, LEFT and SHUFFLE), APPEARANCE (HIDDEN) and CUT (LITTLE, also known as ON1 in recent releases).
      • Using LITTLE gives a score lower than playing the song normally, due to removing all but 4th steps.
  • The default characters are new characters DREAD SNAKE and JANET.
    • Four out of the six characters from Dance Dance Revolution also returned (though KONSENTO:01 was replaced with KONSENTO:02 and OSHARE-ZUKIN with OSHARE-ZUKIN:02-san). The only characters not returning are the two DISC Beings (A & B).
  • DanceDanceRevolution 2ndMIX LINK VERSION added the following features:
    • A port for PlayStation memory cards to allow players to use EDIT MODE steps in the arcade.
    • ALL MUSIC mode, which marks the first time players' song choices are not restricted based on mode or stage. It is activated by pressing the right button four times after highlighting HARD. This mode won't lead you to INTERNET Ranking passwords or Machine High Score Name Entry rankings.
    • Five songs were added: two Dance Dance Revolution CS (Japan) crossovers and three new licenses.
    • The LINK VERSION is the first Dance Dance Revolution game with EVENT MODE support.
  • 2ndMIX has two spin-offs: DDR 2ndMIX with beatmania IIDX CLUB VERSiON and DDR 2ndMIX AND beatmania IIDX substream CLUB VERSiON 2.
  • The original Dance Dance Revolution 2ndMIX received a HD widescreen remaster in Dance Dance Revolution X3 VS 2ndMIX in 2011.
  • Total songs: 38

Gameplay[]

The core gameplay and scoring system of 2ndMix is the same as the previous version of Dance Dance Revolution.

The arrows in 2ndMix do not have different color-cycles based on their time signature. The "Vivid" arrow colors familiar to players of later mixes were not introduced until the club versions.

Link Version[]

Dance Dance Revolution 2ndMix Link Version, released on April 21, 1999, introduced the ability for players to save high scores and play custom step edits using their PlayStation memory cards. A player would first need to format the memory card with "Link Data" using the home version of 2ndMix, and then insert the card into one of two slots on the front of the arcade cabinet. Link Version includes 5 new songs, in addition to the full 2ndMix song list. After the release of Link Version, Link Data features had been implemented in every future DDR version until Dance Dance Revolution SuperNOVA (which was originally said to contain support for PlayStation 2 memory cards, but the functionality was removed), which has new network support over e-Amusement for saving statistics and unlocks.

Home versions[]

Dance Dance Revolution 2ndReMix, the home version of 2ndMix, was released in Japan on September 2, 1999, for the Sony PlayStation. It includes 34 songs, seven of which are new to this version and are hidden and unlockable. Two of the hidden songs were previews of the next arcade version, Dance Dance Revolution 3rdMix and can only be played on Basic difficulty.

The home version has the ability to Disc Change to 1st and Append Club Version. It also allows to unlock features in previous mixes such as the Nonstop Ranking from 3rd Mix. The interface is still the same as the one used in 2ndMix.[1][2][3]

On February 17, 2000, Konami released a version of Dance Dance Revolution 2ndMix for the Dreamcast console. It features 43 songs, seven of which are hidden and unlockable. The song list includes seven songs from Dance Dance Revolution 3rdMix.[4]

A few of the songs in 2ndMix were included in the North American version of Dance Dance Revolution for the PlayStation.[5]

General Information / Changes[]

PS1[]

  • Contains all of Dance Dance Revolution 2ndMIX LINK VERSION's songs.
  • Backwards compatible with Dance Dance Revolution CS (Japan), allowing one to instantly unlock the songs from that game by having data from both games.
    • You can also play all the songs from Dance Dance Revolution CS (Japan) on the 2ndReMIX interface using the DISC CHANGE feature, which can also unlock EVENT MODE by disc changing to the aforementioned title and disc change back and forth between the the two games.
    • However, background effects/animations are turned off, and static backgrounds are shown when played via DISC CHANGE.
      • Disc changing to either of the APPEND DISCS will not allow the player to switch back to 2ndReMIX, disc change to other titles, or trigger EVENT MODE's unlock in 2ndREMIX.
  • STEP BATTLE songs are now playable outside of that mode. Only LET THEM MOVE is available by default, though.
  • The color-coded FLAT arrow has been fixed.
  • First CS Dance Dance Revolution release with ENDLESS MODE, which allows you to play an infinite amount of songs until your dance gauge is empty.
  • EDIT mode is now available by default; you do not need to unlock it. This has been consistent in almost all CS Dance Dance Revolution titles since.
  • Total songs: 35

Dreamcast[]

  • Contains all the songs from both Dance Dance Revolution and Dance Dance Revolution 2ndMIX, with the exception of STRICTLY BUSINESS.
  • All STEP BATTLE songs are now playable outside of STEP BATTLE.
  • Dreamcast Dance Dance Revolution dance mats have a KONAMI panel, with its function used in place of the analog stick on the Dreamcast controller.
  • Not compatible with Dreamcast's VGA Mode.
  • Total number of songs: 47
