Dance Dance Revolution Ultramix, released in Europe as Dancing Stage Unleashed is a music video game in the Dance Dance Revolution series developed and published by Konami and released in 2003 on Xbox.
General Information / Changes[]
Ultramix version[]
- First Dance Dance Revolution title on the Xbox video game console.
- Only Xbox Dance Dance Revolution title to use the series' trademark songwheel interface, using a heavily modified DDRMAX2 as its source.
- It's also the only one to use background animations from the arcade Dance Dance Revolution games. Beginning with ULTRAMIX2, the ULTRAMIX series would mostly use its own generic video clips.
- The design of the game, with the title screen video and arcade marquee banner featuring a similar color scheme and emphasis of a performing arts stage and stage lights, is based on 4thMIX.
- Pre-release screenshots of the game show further influences from 4thMIX; see What Could Have Been for more info.
- ULTRAMIX starts a trend in the Xbox titles where parenthesis in song titles are removed.
- Similar to DDRMAX through EXTREME, jumps count as two notes for combo purposes. This would continue throughout all of the Xbox titles.
- Unlike the arcade/PlayStation/PlayStation 2 Dance Dance Revolution titles, there are no stage numbers. You can play as many songs as you like without pause or options set.
- ULTRAMIX features an unusual default song sort consisting of the licensed songs in alphabetical order, followed by the remaining songs broken into mostly alphabetized groups based roughly on the difficulty of their LIGHT charts.
- Song list places little emphasis on new original songs relative to later Xbox titles, with only four licenses and four new KONAMI originals (the latter all by the same artist). Instead, the vast majority of the song list consists of old Dance Dance Revolution songs and new BEMANI crossovers.
- First CS Dance Dance Revolution release with DLC, allowing you to download new song packs at $4.99 each.
- Song packs consist entirely of old Dance Dance Revolution songs and new BEMANI crossovers.
- None of ULTRAMIX's DLC can be downloaded anymore.
- The dancers no longer dance according to the song's BPM, but at a fixed speed. This would be the norm for every Xbox and Xbox 360 title.
- Dancers also use brand new motion-captured dance routines, replacing the moves used since Dance Dance Revolution. These routines would eventually be used in the arcades in SuperNOVA.
- Exclusive to the ULTRAMIX series is the addition of jiggle physics on the female dancers' breasts.
- First Dance Dance Revolution title with two announcers, and the first with both female and male announcers.
- AFTER THE GAME OF LOVE is used as opposed to the instrumental version (AFTER THE GAME) used in Dance Dance Revolution KONAMIX.
- This makes ULTRAMIX the only non-Japanese CS release of Dance Dance Revolution to feature AFTER THE GAME OF LOVE.
- Conversely, ULTRAMIX still uses the edited version of THE EARTH LIGHT from KONAMIX with the female moaning removed.
- No songs have BEGINNER or CHALLENGE charts, even those that had them originally (or have them in game data).
- First Dance Dance Revolution release to support a widescreen (16:9) aspect ratio and 480p resolution.
- First Dance Dance Revolution release to support 4-player gameplay.
- First Dance Dance Revolution release to support online gameplay (via Xbox Live).
- Total songs: 51 (plus 30 DLC songs)
Unleashed version[]
- The European counterpart of Dance Dance Revolution ULTRAMIX, keeping its interface and unlocking system.
- The main notable difference between Dance Dance Revolution ULTRAMIX and Dancing Stage Unleashed is the removal of 11 KONAMI originals, including all but one of the new songs created for ULTRAMIX. It's the only Unleashed title to do this.
- Additionally, ULTRAMIX's four licensed songs have been replaced with a set of eight brand-new licenses.
- Consequently, Dancing Stage Unleashed contains seven fewer songs than Dance Dance Revolution ULTRAMIX overall.
- Due to the removal of AFTER THE GAME OF LOVE, Dancing Stage Unleashed doesn't contain a Level 1 chart.
