The Groove Radar (グルーヴレーダー) is a pentagon-shaped marker that determines the difficulty of a song through five aspects: Stream, Voltage, Air, Freeze, and Chaos. The Groove Radar was introduced in DDRMAX -Dance Dance Revolution 6thMIX-.
Introduction[]
Introduced in DDRMAX -Dance Dance Revolution 6thMIX-, the GROOVE RADAR (グルーヴレーダー) is a graphical representation of a song difficulty using a pentagon shape.
Originally meant to be the successor to the traditional Feet/Number Level system, both the Feet/Number Level and GROOVE RADAR have been used since DDRMAX2 -Dance Dance Revolution 7thMIX- due to negative reception over the GROOVE RADAR being the only representation of song difficulty.
Starting from Dance Dance Revolution (2014), the GROOVE RADAR numerical values for a chart are always shown on the song select screen. Different values will appear on the GROOVE RADAR depending on the difficulty currently selected for a song. Starting from Dance Dance Revolution SuperNOVA, the values for the GROOVE RADAR are calculated automatically by the game from the stepcharts. In previous games they were entered manually.
Before Dance Dance Revolution SuperNOVA, BEGINNER charts had no Groove Radar data at all.
The GROOVE RADAR was removed from Dance Dance Revolution arcade titles in Dance Dance Revolution WORLD.
Note: The GROOVE RADAR calculations are derived from Dance Dance Revolution (2013) but are valid for later installments of the Dance Dance Revolution arcade series.
The Five Values[]
Stream[]
Main article: Stream (Groove Radar)
Stream determines the overall density of the steps in a song's chart. The number of notes in the song and the length of the song (in seconds) contribute to determining this value.
Voltage[]
Main article: Voltage (Groove Radar)
Voltage determines the peak density of the arrows in a song's chart relative to its average BPM. This is not referring to the fastest section of a song, but the section with the most notes packed on-screen (in any 4 consecutive beats). The average BPM of the song also plays a part in determining this value.
Air[]
Main article: Air (Groove Radar)
Air refers to the number of jumps in a song's chart and as of DDR X, also refer to the number of Shock Arrows in the chart in relation to the song's length.
Freeze[]
Main article: Freeze (Groove Radar)
Freeze depicts the total lengths of the Freeze Arrows (in beats) there are in a chart in relation to the total number of 4th beats in the song.
Chaos[]
Main article: Chaos (Groove Radar)
Chaos determines how many non-4th notes, or off-beat notes, there are in the chart. If there are BPM changes and/or stops, the Chaos value may increase. A main part of determining this value is the distance (in beats) each note is from the one before. Red (4th) notes have no Chaos value themselves.
My Groove Radar[]
MY GROOVE RADAR (マイグルーヴレーダー), introduced in Dance Dance Revolution SuperNOVA2, is the player's own GROOVE RADAR that rates them based on their mastery of the five aspects of the GROOVE RADAR. It starts at 0 for all five parameters and increases as the player plays and completes songs. The values increase by 10% of the calculated fulfilled GROOVE RADAR values for the chart (e.g. if a player scores a MAX COMBO of 508 on POSSESSION's Single EXPERT chart, which has a VOLTAGE value of 161, the player's MY GROOVE RADAR VOLTAGE rating will increase by 13, rounded down from 15% of 134). To advance their MY GROOVE RADAR past 100, the player must achieve 100 on all five aspects first.
This feature was discontinued in Dance Dance Revolution A.
Calculation in older games[]
Since the introduction of the MY GROOVE RADAR feature in Dance Dance Revolution SuperNOVA2, various charts that have more than 100 in any aspect of the GROOVE RADAR have had their ratings in said aspect(s) lowered several times due to the introduction of various songs that have greater parameters than them. This is because prior to Dance Dance Revolution (2014), any new chart that was deemed to go over 200 in any aspect of the GROOVE RADAR with previous GROOVE RADAR parameter calculation formulas resulted in said formulas being adjusted to make that chart reach 200. The following section details what each of the resulting parameters must be for each aspect of the GROOVE RADAR to reach 200 in games before Dance Dance Revolution (2013).
- Dance Dance Revolution SuperNOVA2 → Dance Dance Revolution X
- STREAM: Average Step Density must be 396 (387 on Double) for the STREAM value to be 200. Fascination MAXX's Single CHALLENGE and PARANOIA survivor MAX's Double CHALLENGE charts each had the highest STREAM rating of 200 between Dance Dance Revolution SuperNOVA2 and X.
- VOLTAGE: Average Peak Density Per Minute must be 1,302 for the VOLTAGE value to be 200. PARANOiA ~HADES~'s CHALLENGE charts both had the highest VOLTAGE rating of 200 before Dance Dance Revolution X2.
- AIR: Average Air Density must be 109 for the AIR value to be 200. DYNAMITE RAVE ("AIR" Special)'s CHALLENGE charts had an AIR rating of 200 before the introduction of TWINKLE♡HEART's CHALLENGE charts in Dance Dance Revolution X3 VS 2ndMIX.
- FREEZE: FA Rate must be 9,484 (9,246 on Double) for the FREEZE value to be 200. D2R ("FREEZE" Special)'s CHALLENGE charts have remained the charts with the highest FREEZE rating of 200 since their introduction.
- CHAOS: Unit Chaos Degree must be 25,605 (20,628 on Double) for the CHAOS value to be 200. CHAOS' CHALLENGE charts have remained the charts with the highest CHAOS rating of 200 since their introduction.
- Dance Dance Revolution X2
- STREAM: Average Step Density must be 461 (417 on Double) for the STREAM value to be 200. 888's CHALLENGE charts became the charts with the highest STREAM rating of 200 until EGOISM 440's CHALLENGE charts were introduced in Dance Dance Revolution (2014).
- VOLTAGE: Average Peak Density Per Minute must be 1,329 for the VOLTAGE value to be 200. POSSESSION's EXPERT and CHALLENGE charts became the charts with 200 VOLTAGE.
- AIR: Remained unchanged until X3 VS 2ndMIX.
- FREEZE: Has remained unchanged from SuperNOVA2.
- CHAOS: Has remained unchanged from SuperNOVA2.
- Dance Dance Revolution X3 VS 2ndMIX
- VOLTAGE: Average Peak Density Per Minute must be 1,530 for the VOLTAGE value to be 200. London EVOLVED ver.A's CHALLENGE and Single EXPERT charts had 200 VOLTAGE in their introduction in X3 VS 2ndMIX.
- AIR: Average Air Density must be 115 (111 on Double) for the AIR value to be 200. TWINKLE♡HEART's CHALLENGE charts had 200 AIR when introduced in X3 VS 2ndMIX.
Trivia[]
